ON SCREEN DISPLAY FINDS NEW APPLICATION IN MONITOR VIDEO

By: Don McClatchie

Most everyone working in Broadcast TV is aware of On Screen Display (OSD) technology that allows alpha-numeric and graphics to be placed on a video image.

Now there is a new application of this technology that allows the user to type a custom message on the video screen and then turn it on or off at will with the use of external switches or contacts. As many as ten separate messages 25 characters per line can be typed on ten different lines and each line is independently switchable on or off the monitor screen.

This allows monitors to display more than just the entertainment programming.
This is a new way to deliver alarm, alert or instructional information to the staff that view the video monitors. This type of alarm alert message is more intuitive than a simple alarm bell or flashing light because it displays custom alpha-numeric characters that explain exactly what must be done.

As an example you could connect the relay outputs of a commercial Ad insertion machine to the unit and have the screen indicate that an ad is Q-ing up. Time sensitive alerts can be displayed on the monitor at the moment they occur. Any contact or switch connection can control your custom message on any monitor. You can connect a time switch to this unit and get visual displays at exact times with easy to understand instruction right on the video monitor. This will create a reminder that appears on the monitor screen to make sure that action is taken at the correct time every time.

Or attach your tower light alarm to the unit and get a visual alert when navigation lights go out or other equipment maintenance is required. This method of alert makes sure that the maintenance will not be forgotten. Also public video monitors used for video information or entertainment can be overlaid with emergency exit information or any other message to help with crowd control and keep the people informed with custom pre-programed text.

If you think about it I am sure that you will find an application for this low cost on screen display device to help you do your job more efficiently and reduce the response time for time critical actions.
